glossary of common forestry terminology

Trees take in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the air and store it as carbon (C).

The carbon stored by trees now has a market value, as companies work to reduce their carbon footprint.

These companies can choose to buy Carbon Offset credits from the Chicago Climate Exchange to offset their carbon output.

Forest landowners benefit by practicing sustainable forestry and participating in the Carbon Credits program.

Between 2005-2006 the voluntary offset market grew by 200% (pdf).
