customer’s frequently asked questions

How much will it cost?

The cost of the improvements is paid for by your utility. You will see a fixed monthly charge beginning with the first bill after the improvements are made. The amount of that charge depends on the cost of the improvements. We will not undertake any project where we are not convinced that the amount you save on average will be greater than the amount of the fixed charge.

In some cases where that would happen, you can “buy-down” the amount the utility spends so that your monthly charge is less.

I’m a renter. Can this program help me?

Yes. The property owner must agree to the improvements, but if you pay the utility bills, you will see a fixed monthly charge for the time you live there.

What if I sell the house/move out? The fixed monthly charge remains with the property, not the person. If you own the home and move, you must notify the buyer of the fixed charge. If you are a renter and move, the owner must notify potential renters of the charge.

After a comprehensive energy assessment by our representative, we will determine the best option for your home based upon cost of improvement and potential savings. In general, the best value is found in insulation improvements, sealing up air leaks, sealing duct-work, and replacing electric furnaces or old heat-pumps.

I just need new windows (roof, solar panels, etc). Can this program pay for that?

Possibly, but an energy assessment must determine that is the best investment to reduce your energy bills. Typically, new windows will not save enough energy to justify their cost. The most likely investments will be insulation improvements, sealing up air leaks, sealing duct-work, and replacing electric furnaces or old heat-pumps.

Is this the same thing as Kentucky Home Performance?

How$martKY is a partner with KY Home Performance and typically a How$martKY home will also qualify for the KY Home Performance program.

Will this work for our Church? Business? Community Center?

Possibly. It is a case by case basis and you will need to speak with an energy assessor for more information.

Can this program pay for work I’ve already done?

No. However, if the work is not yet complete, our energy assessor can help you determine whether you are making the best investment or should consider some additional or alternate improvements to help you save energy.

What if it doesn’t work and my bills are higher than they are now?

If the measures are faulty, we will arrange to have them fixed and hold the payments until corrected. We cannot guarantee savings due to changes in behavior or situation (additional occupants, new TV, etc); however such changes would likely cost more without the improvements than with.
