MACED President Justin Maxson's statement about most recent SOAR announcement

Berea, Ky. – The following is MACED President Justin Maxson's statement about the March 24 SOAR announcement made by Governor Steve Beshear and Representative Hal Rogers:

We appreciate Governor Beshear and Congressman Rogers' continued efforts to deepen and expand the SOAR initiative with today's announcement about the process and structure that will support SOAR over the next year.

Creating a public process that allows for deep citizen engagement is critical to the future of eastern Kentucky. While seasoned leadership matters, it is necessary that a diverse set of views shapes the region's path forward. We are excited the working groups are an important next step in the SOAR process. They will require a broad base of people who must provide an ambitious vision, a diverse set of economic development ideas and the hard discussion needed to define a new path forward for the region.

We are pleased that MACED board member Haley McCoy will serve on the SOAR executive committee. We look forward to working with her and all those involved by contributing good ideas that point to a new way forward and lifting up examples of effective economic opportunities that work better for a broader set of people in eastern Kentucky.
