the kentucky forest landowner's handbook

The Kentucky Forest Landowner's Handbook, is now available on CD ROM. Originally released in August, 2004, The Kentucky Forest Landowners Handbook has been a major success. MACED has converted the Handbook to CD ROM format to reach even more Kentucky forest landowners.

The Kentucky Forest Landowner’s Handbook CD ROM is designed to help property-owners better understand their forest and develop a management plan suited to their specific interests, goals and financial requirements. It is suitable for all private forest landowners, whether interested in harvesting wood products, earning income from non-timber forest products (such as herbs and mushrooms), managing for wildlife, recreation or tourism opportunities, or all of the above. This handbook aims to help all private forest landowners make smart decisions about their resources.

The Kentucky Forest Landowner’s Handbook CD ROM
is FREE for all Kentucky forest landowners.

The CD ROM offers many advantages that promote good forestry practices in a way that the original handbook could not. Internet links allow users to connect instantly to important state and regional resources. The contacts section features one-click email access to important local agencies and forestry professionals. The CD ROM is designed to be very user-friendly, requiring no special software. It can also be used without a connection to the internet.

All the same features of the original handbook are accessible in the CD ROM format, this includes:

• A sample harvest contract written by an attorney to reduce the risk of damaging harvest practices
• Contact information for Kentucky’s state agencies and professional foresters
• A glossary of common terms used by loggers and foresters
• Land and water protection measures including state-required Best Management Practices (BMPs), complete with illustrations
• Step-by–step forest assessment and planning advice — from walking the land to drafting informed management goals
• Advice on discussing management plans and inheritance with family members
• Worksheets, diagrams and real-world case studies are also included to help landowners improve the health and value of their forests.

The Kentucky Forest Landowner's Handbook is also available as a series of PDF files for convenient download. To download a chapter, simply click on the title of the section you want. To view these files you will need a copy of the free Acrobat Reader. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader, you can download it by clicking on the image below.
